Tripping 2 Assignments
Assignment #1 - Theory Presentation
You will make a presentation to the group on one of the topics indicated below. Assume your presentation is in a wilderness setting, so you will not have access to overheads, slide projectors etc (a whiteboard will
be available). The presentation will be between 15-20 minutes. The objective is to transmit a body of knowledge in an interesting and educating manner to a group of peers. Your peers will passively participate
by listening, watching and asking questions. Handouts, props and demonstrations are encouraged.
Canoeing History
– The candidate should be able to competently discuss a topic related to the history of canoeing. He/she should demonstrate an understanding of the social and technological factors which have influenced the evolution of canoeing since the arrival of Europeans. Alternatively, this discussion could be some aspect of canoeing history of an area in Canada or the canoe trip itself.
Canoe Design and Construction
– The candidate should demonstrate knowledge of the major principals of canoe hull design and the influence of these factors on canoe performance, with the advantages and disadvantages of each. Discuss also the types and properties of common canoe construction materials, with the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Weather Interpretation
– The candidate will discuss 6 cloud formations, wind changes, and air pressure changes that indicate probable weather modifications. Weather folklore, nature’s signals of weather change, and modern portable instruments of weather interpretation can also be discussed.
Canoe Repair and Maintenance
– The candidate should able to demonstrate an ability to carry out minor repairs to wood-canvas, aluminum, fibreglass, and ABS canoes (small tear or puncture, broken thwart or seat etc.). A list of items, or examples, to carry in a repair kit for a canoe repair should be discussed.
Hypothermia – The candidate will discuss the signs, symptoms, prevention and treatment of a hypothermic victim.
Hyperthermia (Heat Stroke/ Heat Exhaustion) - – The candidate will discuss the signs, symptoms, prevention and treatment of a hyperthermic victim.
Assignment #2 - On the Trail Teach
In addition to the above formal theory presentation you will teach a topic at some point during the course. This is an open topic and ideally suited to your own area of expertise or interest. The format is open and
can vary with a formal teaching of a skill, a presentation, a game, reading or an activity. Topics are up to you. Here are some suggestions:

Assignment #3 – Trip Planning Exercise
This is a major assignment planning a 10 day canoe trip. This trip plan can be for any canoe trip in the world as long as the trip is 10 days long, not including travel time. You may hand in this
assignment at the start of the course but it is it is recommended you wait until after the course finishes to complete the assignment, since most of what is required will be discussed during the
course. The assignment is due up to one year after the course finishes. Handing the assignment in as soon as the course completes is highly recommended. The following is required:
